ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Chennai, Feb 24: India’s preparations for their crucial Super Eight encounter against Zimbabwe have been dealt an unexpected setback, with Rinku Singh leaving the squad just two days before the high-pressure clash in Chennai.
The must-win fixture is scheduled for Thursday (February 26) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, where India are expected to go all out in a bid to keep their T20 World Cup semi-final hopes alive. However, the team will now have to regroup without one of their explosive middle-order options, at least for the moment.
According to sources within the camp, Rinku has returned home due to a family emergency. He was also absent from India’s training session on Tuesday, raising further uncertainty over his availability for the contest. There is, as of now, no clarity on whether he will be able to rejoin the squad in time for Thursday’s game.
The timing of his departure adds to India’s mounting concerns following their bruising 76-run defeat to South Africa last weekend at the Narendra Modi Stadium. That loss not only dented morale but also severely damaged India’s net run-rate, leaving them in a precarious position in the Super Eight standings.
With qualification hanging in the balance, India are under pressure to deliver a commanding performance against Zimbabwe.
Rinku’s absence, even if temporary, could force the team management to rethink their batting combinations at a time when stability and firepower are both equally vital.
Whether he returns before match day remains to be seen. For now, India must focus on preparing for a decisive showdown, knowing that there is little room left for error. (Agencies)
