PREMIER LEAGUE

London, Feb 24: Benjamin Sesko once again emerged as Manchester United’s decisive figure, climbing off the bench to fire home a priceless winner in a hard-fought victory over Everton and propel his side firmly into the Premier League’s top four.
On a night when clear-cut chances were scarce at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, it took a moment of precision and pace from the Slovenian striker to separate the two teams. Introduced just before the hour mark, Sesko struck in the 71st minute to seal a 1-0 win for Manchester United and continue his growing influence under head coach Michael Carrick.

Super-Sub Strikes Again

It was the second successive match in which Sesko had delivered from the bench. Thirteen days earlier, he had salvaged a late point at West Ham with a dramatic injury-time effort. This time, his intervention proved even more decisive.
The move began deep in United’s half, with Sesko initiating a swift counter-attack before releasing Matheus Cunha.
Rather than admiring his pass, the £73.7 million forward surged upfield with determination. Cunha switched play with a searching long ball towards Bryan Mbeumo, and by then Sesko had already burst beyond Everton’s back line.
Meeting the cross with a composed first-time finish, he guided the ball beyond Jordan Pickford for his eighth goal of the campaign.
Curiously, only two of those strikes came under former manager Ruben Amorim.
Three arrived during Darren Fletcher’s brief interim spell, and now three more have followed since Carrick assumed control. The current manager has overseen five wins from six matches, steadying the ship at a crucial juncture of the season.

A Contest Short on Spark

For long stretches, the match struggled to ignite. Both sides appeared rusty after an extended break, having exited the FA Cup early and endured a near fortnight without competitive action.
Everton, organised and disciplined, limited space effectively. United, meanwhile, found creativity hard to come by in a midfield battle defined by caution rather than flair.
The best first-half opportunity fell to Amad, whose effort was partially saved by Pickford before James Tarkowski reacted sharply to clear off the line. At the other end, visiting goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied teenager Harrison Armstrong, who impressed with his energy and ambition.
As the game edged towards its closing stages, Michael Keane unleashed a fierce long-range drive that seemed destined for the top corner. Lammens, however, produced a fine fingertip save to preserve United’s slender advantage.

Everton’s Frustration Grows

For Everton, the defeat extended a worrying run — seven home matches without victory in all competitions. Manager David Moyes cut a frustrated figure at full-time, aware that his side had matched United for significant periods.
There were positives. Armstrong’s emergence offered encouragement, while former United midfielder James Garner excelled in an unfamiliar right-back role. Tyrique George nearly snatched a late equaliser in stoppage time, only to be denied once more by Lammens.
Yet the difference lay in depth. Everton’s core — Tarkowski, Pickford and Keane — remains dependable, but when it came to a decisive moment of quality, United’s investment told.

Carrick’s Calm Authority

Carrick, whose only alterations to his starting line-up in recent weeks have been enforced by injury, demonstrated faith in his squad once again. With Lisandro Martinez sidelined by a minor calf issue, Leny Yoro stepped in seamlessly at the back.Critics had questioned whether United’s momentum had stalled following an underwhelming display at West Ham. Carrick responded not with public rebuttals, but with trust — particularly in Sesko. When the breakthrough seemed unlikely, he turned to his towering striker. The finish may not have carried the drama of his London heroics, but its significance could prove even greater.
Sesko almost doubled his tally in stoppage time after being released by Diogo Dalot, only to miscontrol at a crucial moment. Pickford smothered the danger, sparing Everton further punishment.

The Bigger Picture

The victory lifts United clear in fourth, three points ahead of both Chelsea and Liverpool, and just three behind third-placed Aston Villa — who visit Old Trafford in three matches’ time.
With five Champions League spots widely expected for English clubs, the margin for error remains slim. Sesko’s recent contributions may yet prove pivotal in the race for Europe.
For Everton, ambitions are shifting. A move away from Goodison Park has signalled fresh aspirations, and relegation fears have not loomed this season. Moyes has spoken openly of targeting more than mere survival. However, as clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace have discovered, competing on multiple fronts demands resources and depth that are not easily assembled. On this evidence, Everton possess resilience and promise — but not yet the cutting edge required to consistently trouble the league’s elite.United, by contrast, have found theirs. And once again, it arrived from the bench, wearing the number nine.
