Gitanjali Angmo expresses faith in judiciary in Wangchuk case
NEW DELHI, Feb 26: HIAL co-founder Gitanjali J Angmo expressed faith in the judiciary amid the NSA case against her husband, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, following the Supreme Court adjourning the hearing to March 10. Angmo highlighted multiple procedural lapses, including delays in providing the detention order and related materials, discrepancies in video evidence, and reliance on stale FIRs that did not mention Wangchuk. She also criticized the detention order as a “cut, copy-paste” of the SSP’s recommendation. Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act for alleged involvement in the Leh violence on September 24 last year. Despite these challenges, Angmo maintained that they believe in “Satyamev Jayate” and hoped for a resolution, emphasizing resilience and positivity. She also noted Wangchuk’s recovery from a gastrointestinal infection in Jodhpur jail and expressed confidence that the final hearing could close the matter. (PTI)
Three held for kidnapping minor girl in Maharashtra
Latur, Feb 26: Three men in their 20s were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a minor girl in Maharashtra’s Latur district, police said on Thursday. The trio was taken into custody within an hour of receiving a complaint, an official said. A minor girl was allegedly abducted in a blue car within the jurisdiction of Deoni police on Wednesday, he said. After receiving a complaint, a search operation was launched, and police alerted authorities in Beed and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts as well as highway patrol units. The official said a highway security team intercepted the car at Gevrai in Beed, detained the three accused and rescued the girl. The accused, identified as Udgir residents Kalim Hakani Sheikh (20), Ashpak Karim Sheikh (20), and Bilal Khaled Qureshi (25), were subsequently arrested, the official added. (PTI)
Defence expert Maroof Raza passes away
NEW DELHI, Feb 26: Major Maroof Raza, a distinguished retired officer of the Indian Army and a prominent commentator on strategic affairs, particularly Indo-Pak relations, passed away at the age of 67 on Thursday. His demise marks the end of an era for India’s defence journalism, where he was revered for his insightful analyses and dignified presence in media discussions. Major Raza, who served in the Grenadiers Regiment, was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1980. His military career included significant experience in counter-insurgency operations in India’s North East, which later informed his expertise as a defence analyst. After retiring from service, he transitioned into academia and media, earning a reputation as one of India’s most articulate voices on national security. He held the position of Consulting Editor at Times Now, a leading English news channel, and served as Editor-at-Large for FAUJI INDIA magazine. Additionally, he published the monthly periodical SALUTE, contributing extensively to public discourse on military and geopolitical matters. (Agencies)
