Sankgeetha Vijay, wife of actor and politician Vijay, has filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu district court, citing Vijay’s “adulterous relationship” with an actress as the reason.
She has sought dissolution of their marriage under sections 27(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act 1954. The court has issued a notice to Vijay, directing him to appear on April 20.
In her petition, Sankgeetha stated that she is a UK citizen with a BSc in Biomedical Science from London. Their marriage was first registered in the UK on July 10, 1998, followed by a Hindu ceremonial wedding on August 25, 1999, in Chennai.
She claimed that the marriage was harmonious initially but alleged that in April 2021 she discovered Vijay’s extramarital relationship, which caused her emotional distress. Despite assurances from Vijay, the affair continued, causing her mental suffering and public controversies in 2024.
Sankgeetha stated that the marriage has irretrievably broken down and survives only on paper. She requested residence rights at her matrimonial home in Neelankarai, permanent alimony, and that Vijay bear the costs of the proceedings, citing betrayal, violation of trust, and ongoing mental torture.
