SHILLONG, Feb 28: Shankarlal Goenka, a doyen of cinema in Northeast, was conferred the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremony in Guwahati on Friday.
The 88-year-old veteran and his family are credited with establishing Shillong’s first cinema hall, Kelvin Cinema, at Police Bazar. The award, covering the 2024-25 period, was presented to him by renowned filmmaker Jahnu Barua.
Goenka’s family trust, the Jeevan Ram-Mungi Devi Goenka Public Charitable Trust, collaborated with Filmfare to bring the awards to Assam for the first time.
Over the decades, Goenka has been a staunch supporter of regional cinema, notably producing the acclaimed Khasi film Iewduh, directed by Pradip Kurbah.
Accepting the honour, a visibly emotional Goenka said, “I have always wondered when I would be recognised for my sincere and persistent efforts to support regional cinema. Now that it has come, albeit late in the day, I am deeply gratified.”
