SHILLONG, March 1: Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilisers, Kirti Azad, has acknowledged the active role of the late Shillong MP, Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, during the committee’s study visit to Meghalaya in April 2025.
In a condolence letter addressed to Dr Syngkon’s sister, Wendy Tariang, Azad recalled that during the committee’s study visit, Syngkon strongly raised concerns about environmental issues, including the pollution affecting the Lukha River.
His initiative, the committee stated, led to a detailed examination of the environmental impact of industrial activities in the region.
Azad also mentioned the late MP’s efforts to highlight indigenous knowledge systems.
Azad said Syngkon facilitated interactions between traditional healers and officials from the Ministry of AYUSH.
The Committee noted that Dr Syngkon was regular in his attendance and contributed thoughtful and insightful interventions during discussions, strengthening the committee’s oversight work on key issues related to chemicals and fertilisers.
Expressing deep sorrow over the untimely demise of the parliamentarian, who was also a member of the committee, Azad conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the committee members and staff, recalling Dr Syngkon’s active participation and meaningful contributions to parliamentary deliberations.
He described Syngkon as a dedicated public representative whose humility, integrity and commitment to public service earned him respect across party lines.
Describing his passing as an irreparable loss to Parliament and his constituents, the committee chairperson extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for them to find the strength to endure the loss.
The committee had earlier observed a one-minute silence during its sitting at the Parliament House Annexe as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
