SHILLONG, March 6: The High Court of Meghalaya has admitted a PIL against the participation of non-tribals in GHADC elections.
The PIL was filed by Niksrang Ch Marak through his lawyer P.T. Sangma.
During the hearing on Friday, the counsel appearing for the respondents sought time to take instructions.
Following the request, the bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh listed the matter for hearing on March 9.
It may be added that a notification issued by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council barring non-tribal people from contesting the April 10 elections to the GHADC has stoked controversy in the state.
While Garo tribal organisations have defended the GHADC’s February 17 notification, which makes it mandatory for all candidates to possess an ST certificate for contesting the polls, non-tribal leaders have condemned the notification as unconstitutional and an attempt to deprive them of their rights.
