SHILLONG, March 7: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) handled 1,191 freight rakes in February, marking a 4.7% increase compared to the 1,137 rakes unloaded during the same month last year.
The cargo included essential and industrial commodities such as food grains, fertilisers, cement, and coal.
In the Northeast, Assam recorded the highest volume with 655 rakes, 308 of which carried essential goods for the public distribution system.
Other regional figures included 85 rakes in Tripura, 17 in Nagaland, 16 in Manipur, nine in Arunachal Pradesh, and seven in Mizoram. Meghalaya’s only railway station at Mendipathar, North Garo Hills, unloaded one rake during the month.
Within NFR’s broader jurisdiction, West Bengal and Bihar accounted for 222 and 179 rakes respectively, supporting inter-regional supply chains.
NFR officials credited the performance to improved turnaround times and unloading efficiency achieved through coordinated monitoring by field units.
