KATHMANDU, March 8: A judicial inquiry commission investigating the deadly Gen Z protests of September 2025 in Nepal has submitted its report to the interim government, highlighting governance failures behind the violence.
The commission, led by former Supreme Court justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, handed the report to interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar on Sunday.
However, the commission did not publicly disclose the names of those responsible for ordering or carrying out the shootings during the protests.
The demonstrations on September 8 and 9 last year resulted in the deaths of 76 people—22 on the first day and 54 on the second—making it one of the deadliest protest episodes in the country’s recent history.
According to the commission, the unrest was largely triggered by public frustration over poor governance, corruption and the politicisation of state institutions such as the bureaucracy and judiciary.
The panel recommended legal action against individuals who ordered the shootings, those who carried them out and officials who failed to prevent the violence.
The inquiry commission was formed on September 21, shortly after Karki assumed office as interim prime minister following the resignation of former premier K. P. Sharma Oli. (PTI)
