Former Union minister Biren Sing Engti passes away

GUWAHATI, March 10: Former Union Minister and veteran political leader from Karbi Anglong, Biren Sing Engti passed away at a private hospital here on Tuesday morning.

An illustrious parliamentarian, 81-year-old Engti had represented the people in the Lok Sabha for five terms. He was also a former chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC)

In a condolence message, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The passing away of Shri Biren Singh Engti, veteran leader from Karbi Anglong and former Union Minister, is a great loss for Assam.”

“His years of service to the people and efforts for the development of the hill regions will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to him and his family,” Sarma stated.

Beyond his roles in Parliament and the Union Government, Engti’s contribution to the political landscape of Karbi Anglong was profound.

“He played an important role in shaping the region’s political discourse and strengthening democratic participation in the hill districts. For many years, he remained one of the most prominent leaders representing the aspirations and identity of the Karbi people,” KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang stated in his condolence message.

“An educated and thoughtful leader, he held a master’s degree in political science and a law degree from Gauhati University, after completing his undergraduate studies at Nowgong College,” Ronghang stated.

“His passing is a great loss not only to Karbi Anglong but to the wider political life of Assam. His legacy of dedication, service and leadership will continue to inspire future generations. My heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those who mourn his loss,” the KAAC CEM stated.
