NEW DELHI, March 11: A mob attacked a Meghalaya Police team near Wajidpur-Shikrawa village in Haryana’s Nuh district when it was taking a key accused in an ATM robbery case into custody, officials said on Wednesday.
One of the policemen was injured in the attack on the Shikrawa-Bhadas Road. The area is under the Nuh Police Station.
The police registered an attempt-to-murder case against 12 named and several other unnamed individuals, who tried to free the accused, Rahul Khan.
The Nuh Police said special teams have been formed to arrest those involved in the attack on the Meghalaya Police team, and further investigation into the incident is underway.
The Meghalaya Police team was escorting Khan, a resident of Wajidpur village, who is wanted in multiple ATM theft cases across Delhi, Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. A crowd of 20 to 30 people, including women, surrounded the police vehicle, allegedly pelted stones, tried to snatch the car keys, and attempted to seize official weapons to free the accused.
The police fired shots in self-defence to disperse the mob. During the confrontation, a local youth named Tarif Khan sustained a bullet injury in his leg and was hospitalised. His condition is reported as stable.
Nuh Additional Superintendent of Police Ayush Yadav said that the accused suddenly grabbed the steering wheel of the police vehicle and attempted to overturn it in an apparent bid to escape from custody. Members of the crowd, then, reportedly tried to snatch the vehicle keys and weapons from the police personnel.
Forensic teams inspected the site, and recovered empty cartridges and blood samples. Special police teams are currently conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The authorities are monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of rumours related to the incident. The Meghalaya Police resorted to aerial firing in self-defence, and to bring the situation under control.
The Meghalaya Police went to Haryana to take Rahul Khan into custody in connection with an ATM robbery case registered at the Mawngap Police Station in East Khasi Hills district. Cases against him are also registered at the Dwarka and Dabri police stations in Delhi.
