SHILLONG, March 14: As Garo Hills senses the return of normalcy after the recent unrest, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne on Saturday stressed that the long-standing issues leading to the postponement of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections must be resolved before the polls can proceed.
Chyne noted that the current complications stem from deep-seated problems, adding that conducting the elections will remain difficult unless authorities address these underlying matters first.
Responding to queries on the postponement, he said the prevailing situation is not conducive to holding the polls and that proceeding under such circumstances would be unwise. He added that the party does not oppose the delay, noting that the district administration sought the postponement after assessing the ground situation.
Regarding the selection of a candidate for the upcoming MP elections, Chyne said the UDP has not yet met to discuss the matter and no decision has been made.
