SHILLONG, March 15: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has sharply criticised the National People’s Party (NPP) for its inaction on the participation of non-tribals in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, saying the issue has been ignored even after eight years in power for the MDA alliance.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, CoMSO chairman Roy Kupar Synrem said the NPP’s delays and political doublespeak were unacceptable.
“At a time when the rights, identity, and constitutional safeguards of the indigenous tribal people are under threat, the NPP has chosen to hide behind empty words, delays, and calculated silence,” he said.
Synrem added that promises such as “looking into the matter” or assurances that “NPP will resolve the issue” were insufficient while legal loopholes and confusion persist.
“If the government truly respects the autonomy of the GHADC and the rights of the A•chik community, it must act immediately,” he said.
He warned that continued inaction raised doubts about the sincerity and political will of the NPP-led government.
The CoMSO chairman demanded decisive measures to uphold the sanctity of the GHADC elections and to correct any anomalies affecting the constitutional rights of the A•chik people.
“The patience of the indigenous people is running out. A time will come when no amount of speeches will silence the anger against this continued betrayal,” Synrem warned.
