SHILLONG, March 15: A 30-year-old labourer working at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex, Polo Ground died following a physical altercation with a fellow worker on Saturday night, police said on Sunday.
The deceased, Rash Ch. Momin, a resident of Shipur village in South West Khasi Hills, sustained serious head injuries after falling during the fight and was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital where he was declared dead at 11:40 PM, despite resuscitation efforts.
Police said the incident took place at the construction site where Momin was employed by Badri Rai Pvt. Ltd. Preliminary inquiries revealed that a quarrel between Momin and co-worker Jakob D. Marak, also from Shipur, escalated into a physical fight.
During the altercation, Marak allegedly struck Momin on the back with a bamboo stick, causing him to fall and sustain critical injuries.
“Both individuals had reportedly consumed alcohol prior to the altercation, which led to a heated argument and the ensuing fight,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem stated.
An FIR has been registered, and Marak has been arrested in connection with the incident. The case is currently under investigation.
Police have urged employers and workers to maintain discipline at construction sites and exercise caution to prevent similar incidents in the future.
