SHILLONG, March 16: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has operationalised ‘CHAKSHU’, a citizen-centric facility under the Sanchar Saathi portal, to combat telecom fraud and strengthen consumer protection. Since its implementation, a significant number of residents in Meghalaya have used the platform to report suspected fraudulent activities.
These reports have enabled the DoT to identify fraudulent patterns and coordinate swift action with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and law enforcement agencies.
Officials have stated that the active participation in the state reflects growing public awareness and effective cooperation between police and telecom authorities to secure the digital ecosystem.
CHAKSHU is a user-friendly platform that allows citizens to report suspected fraud, spam messages, and harmful web links received via phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp or social media. This includes common scams such as the impersonation of government or bank officials, fake investment schemes, KYC-related fraud and malicious phishing applications.
The platform also allows users to report unsolicited commercial communications received without consent.
The department has encouraged people to report such incidents preferably within seven days to ensure timely and effective intervention.
Authorities clarified that CHAKSHU is intended for reporting suspected attempts and spam, not for cases involving actual financial loss or cybercrime.
For incidents where money has already been lost, people have been advised to immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
