TURA, March 17: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the state government to restore internet services in Garo Hills, stating that the week-long shutdown has caused severe disruption to daily life.
MPCC working president Deborah C. Marak on Tuesday highlighted that the suspension of internet has hit businesses hard, with traders and daily wage earners suffering losses due to the breakdown of digital payments and supply chains.
She noted that routine work in both government and private sectors has been significantly hampered.
The Congress leader also raised concerns over the impact on students, who are unable to access study materials or receive examination updates.
She added that healthcare services, emergency communications and banking operations have faced interruptions, further adding to public distress.
While acknowledging that temporary restrictions are sometimes necessary for law and order, Marak argued that a shutdown exceeding a week is excessive.
She questioned the government’s inability to maintain peace through alternative means without bringing normal life to a standstill.
Reiterating her demand, Marak called the ongoing suspension unjustified and a disproportionate burden on the citizens of Garo Hills.
