Meghalaya targets one lakh hectares of land for organic farming by 2028

SHILLONG, March 17: Meghalaya aims to bring one lakh hectares of land under organic farming by 2028, it was informed during a regional conference on natural farming held at MAMETI, Upper Shillong, on Tuesday. The event was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Regional Centre for Organic & Natural Farming (RCONF), Imphal, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA). During the programme, Director of Horticulture Bansara Mylliemnagap stated that Meghalaya’s traditional agricultural practices give it a natural advantage in the shift toward sustainable farming. She noted that organic methods restore soil health and reduce costs for local farmers while securing better market prices. To ensure long-term success, she called for the integration of livestock into farming clusters and greater engagement with the younger generation. On the other hand, Chief Administrative Officer of MEGNOLIA Maqbool Lyngdoh Suiam detailed the government’s efforts in managing certification costs and developing market linkages for high-value crops. “We aim to reach the figure of one lakh hectares covered under organic farming by 2028,” Suiam said, emphasising the mission to transform small-scale landholdings into profitable and chemical-free zones. Informing about Meghalaya’s progress under the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), Joint Director of Horticulture Lucky Diengdoh informed that 79 farming clusters have been established. Over 9,100 farmers have enrolled, representing 92% of the targeted demographic and covering 3,950 hectares. She added that 89% of soil health cards have already been distributed. Meanwhile, Shanlang Lyngdoh, COO of the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS), highlighted the role of women’s self-help groups (SHGs) in promoting ecological practices through farmer schools and community seed banks. The conference concluded with an interactive panel discussion on implementation strategies and the presentation of ‘Best Farmer’ awards to individuals from various districts. The awardees included Khalainbhon Jolang and Ringtone Nongspung (Ri-Bhoi); Balari Lyngkhoi and Brijita Marbaniang (South West Khasi Hills); Sinolin Thongni and Airis Lyngkhoi (West Khasi Hills); Dalajied Lyngkhoi (Eastern West Khasi Hills); Amity Kyndait and Solda Phawa (East Jaintia Hills); and Aroma Talang (West Jaintia Hills).

Party MLA calls UDP cabinet reshuffle a collective decision

SHILLONG, March 17: UDP MLA from Mawsynram, Ollan Singh Suin, clarified on Tuesday that the recent Cabinet reshuffle was a unanimous decision supported by the party’s legislators. Suin stated that 10 of the 12 UDP MLAs signed in favour of the move. The only two not involved in the decision-making process were the outgoing ministers, Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla, who were reportedly unaware of the change until it was executed. The statement refutes allegations by former minister Paul Lyngdoh, who claimed the decision was taken unilaterally by UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh. Suin asserted that the move was agreed upon collectively by the party’s legislative wing. In the reshuffle within the NPP-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) government, Metbah Lyngdoh and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui replaced Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla. Suin also noted that it is natural for MLAs to aspire to Cabinet positions, adding that he remains open to such a role if given the opportunity.
