The release of Dhurandhar 2 has triggered widespread political debate over its portrayal of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and alleged links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence.
Leaders across parties have expressed sharply divided views, reflecting the film’s controversial reception.
Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav supported the film, stating that cinema often reflects real societal events. Having known Atiq Ahmed during their time in Parliament, he said such portrayals are acceptable and even noted the film’s strong audience response, with tickets reportedly in high demand.
In contrast, Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai criticised the film, alleging it was politically motivated and part of a broader propaganda effort.
Similarly, Congress leaders including Tariq Anwar, Rajesh Rathod, and Asit Nath Tiwari accused the film of promoting divisive narratives and spreading negativity, particularly by targeting specific communities.
They argued such portrayals could deepen social tensions and called for government scrutiny.
Janata Dal (United) spokespersons adopted a more cautious approach. Neeraj Kumar emphasised the role of the Censor Board in regulating film content and warned that glorifying individuals with criminal backgrounds could be problematic.
Meanwhile, Rajeev Ranjan refrained from commenting without watching the film.
From Shiv Sena, Shaina NC highlighted that while debates over propaganda are valid, films are primarily meant for entertainment and should avoid creating unnecessary controversy.
Uttar Pradesh Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar echoed a neutral stance, noting that filmmakers create content based on what they believe will appeal to audiences, not government direction.
Religious leaders, including Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi and Maulana Chaudhary Ifraheem Husain, also raised concerns, accusing the film of fuelling communal divisions for commercial gain.
Despite the controversy, the film, linked to Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, has performed strongly at the box office. However, cancellations and delays of preview shows may impact final collections.
Overall, Dhurandhar 2 continues to spark debate, balancing commercial success with political and social criticism.
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma praised Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge as a “cinematic disruptor” that challenges formulaic Bollywood.
Released on March 19, 2026, the spy thriller starring Ranveer Singh has smashed all previous box office records, reportedly earning over Rs 100 crore worldwide on its first day.
Varma highlighted Singh’s layered anti-hero performance, the film’s raw action, and grounded storytelling, calling it a threat to traditional hero-centric spectacles.
He warned filmmakers relying on exaggerated masala cinema to adapt or risk obsolescence. The cast also includes Arjun Rampal and Sanjay Dutt. (Agencies)
