Cricket Ireland Pushes for 2027 Debut of New tourney

Dublin, March 21: The winds of change may soon sweep across European cricket. A fresh idea, ambitious in scope and rich in potential, is beginning to gather momentum—one that could reshape the way the sport is played and perceived across the continent.
Cricket Ireland has taken the lead in proposing a ‘Euro Nations Cup’, a multi-nation tournament that aims to bring together Europe’s leading cricketing sides under one competitive umbrella. If discussions progress as anticipated, the inaugural edition could be staged as early as the summer of 2027.
At the heart of the proposal is Cricket Ireland chair Brian MacNeice, who has emerged as one of its strongest advocates. For him, this is not merely an idea, but a vision—one that has been in the making for some time.
“I’ve had this on the table for discussion with various stakeholders for quite some time,” MacNeice said while unveiling Ireland’s home international fixtures for 2026. “It’s something that I’m very passionate about and fundamentally believe in.”
The concept draws inspiration from the Asia Cup, a tournament that has long served as a platform for regional rivalry and commercial success. In a similar vein, the proposed Euro Nations Cup would feature a select group of European teams, potentially including England cricket team, Ireland cricket team, Scotland cricket team, Netherlands cricket team, and Italy cricket team.
What sets the proposed competition apart is its inclusive structure. Plans are in place for both men’s and women’s tournaments to run alongside each other, reflecting a broader commitment to the growth of the game across genders. The format is expected to lean towards T20 cricket, a choice that aligns with the global trend towards shorter, more commercially viable formats. While the finer details—such as scheduling, venues, and format—are yet to be finalised, MacNeice indicated that discussions have reached an advanced stage. There is growing confidence within the governing body that the tournament will move from concept to reality in the near future.
“The conversations have developed and evolved to a point where I’m much more confident that it is going to happen,” he noted, adding that formal announcements regarding structure and logistics could emerge within the next few months.
Despite early engagement with the England and Wales Cricket Board during England’s T20I tour of Ireland last year, it is understood that the ECB has not played a direct role in the most recent rounds of discussions. Nevertheless, the involvement—or eventual backing—of major stakeholders will be crucial to the tournament’s success. From a commercial perspective, the outlook appears promising. Though broadcast negotiations are yet to begin in earnest, there is an expectation that the tournament will attract significant interest from media partners, given the growing appetite for international T20 competitions.Alongside this ambitious proposal, Cricket Ireland also announced strategic long-term arrangements with the Emirates Cricket Board and the Cricket Association of Nepal.
These partnerships will see Ireland’s men’s team engage in regular white-ball series against the UAE and Nepal, while also opening pathways for Irish players to feature in franchise leagues. (Agencies)
