GUWAHATI, March 23: Timely intervention by the Indian Army averted a potential disaster with a bomb disposal team neutralising unexploded ordnances, including RPG and UBGL rounds, found at the site of a standoff atack near an Assam Police Commando camp at Jagun in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Notably, the attack by ULFA(I) was reported at approximately 2am on Sunday near the Assam Police Commando camp at Jagun.
“The incident left behind unexploded ordnance, including RPG and UBGL rounds, posing a serious threat to the local population. Responding promptly, Red Shield Sappers, in coordination with Assam Rifles, mobilised a bomb disposal team to the site. The area was swiftly cordoned off and all safety protocols were meticulously enforced to ensure full control of the situation,” a statement issued by PRO, Defence here on Monday, said.
“The unexploded ordnance was subsequently neutralised in a controlled manner at a secure location away from civilian habitation, eliminating any risk to life and property. The operation was carried out with a high degree of professionalism, precision and adherence to established procedures,” the statement read.
“The swift and coordinated response ensured the safety of the local populace and prevented any collateral damage. The Indian Army remains committed to maintaining peace, security and stability in the region and continues to remain vigilant against emerging threats,” the PRO stated.
The banned outfit United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) had claimed responsibility for the attack on Assam Police commando camp, injuring at least four police personnel.
The injured police personnel were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Security forces had cordoned off the area in Upper Assam and launched an operation to trace the assailants
Condemning the attack on an Assam Police commando camp, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed mediapersons in Dima Hasao on Sunday that security forces have already launched a counter-insurgency operation and the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“The attack on the police commando camp is highly condemnable. The Army and police have launched a counter-insurgency operation. I am certain that those who have carried out the attack would soon be nabbed,” the chief minister said.
