Restrictive orders continue in southern Nepal district
KATHMANDU, March 22: Restrictive orders were reinstated Sunday in Kapilvastu district, southern Nepal, after a clash between Hindu and Muslim communities turned violent, officials said. The District Administration Office imposed the orders in parts of Maharajgunj Municipality, following the district security committee’s directive. The restrictions ban public gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, and meetings to prevent further unrest. The violence began Saturday when Hindus celebrating Navaratri recited bhajans in Bargadwa, which Muslims observing Eid said was too loud. The disagreement escalated into a clash, leaving at least 20 people injured, including security personnel. Police used baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd. On Sunday, the administration organized a meeting with political parties, civil society, and other stakeholders to restore calm and promote communal harmony. Officials said the initiative seeks to ease tensions, foster cooperation between communities, and ensure peaceful coexistence in the municipality. Authorities continue to monitor the area closely.
