SHILLONG, March 23: The Meghalaya government and the Rangbah Shnong of Laitumkhrah are expected to finalise a decision on the relocation of hawkers in the area within the next 10 days.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar, announced the timeline following a meeting on Monday. He stated that a concrete decision would be reached once the state government and the Rangbah Shnong verify the proposed relocation site. A joint inspection of the area is expected to be conducted soon.
According to Dhar, the government aims to complete the relocation of the hawkers within the next two months.
Local MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh noted that Laitumkhrah faces significant pressure from both vehicular movement and pedestrians. She stressed that stakeholders must exercise caution while discussing relocation details, though she declined to disclose the specific location or the number of hawkers involved.
In a separate development, Dhar said that the PWD will convene a meeting on Tuesday to address drainage problems in several city localities during heavy rainfall.
Regarding traffic management, the Deputy CM mentioned that the government is gradually implementing a “no parking” policy, adding that authorities intend to avoid being overly restrictive regarding roadside parking for the time being.
