SHILLONG, March 23: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) on Monday filed a formal complaint with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), seeking a probe into the alleged air pollution by Riangdo Veneer Industry Pvt Ltd in West Khasi Hills district.
HITO president Donbok Dkhar said the organisation observed thick black smoke emanating from the factory’s chimney on March 18, raising concerns about possible violations of environmental norms.
Describing the incident as a serious risk to both public health and the environment, HITO stated that such emissions are in violation of the air quality standards prescribed by the MSPCB. It warned that continued pollution could negatively impact residents in nearby areas.
Urging immediate corrective measures, the organisation called upon the industry to install and properly operate pollution control devices, particularly during the burning of waste materials.
It also stressed that these devices should be activated from the beginning of boiler operations to effectively curb emissions.
HITO has further requested the MSPCB to conduct a thorough inspection of the unit and take appropriate action, including imposing penalties or enforcing operational changes, if any violations are established.
Dkhar also said that it has recorded video evidence of the incident, which will be submitted to authorities to substantiate its claims.
Expressing concern over the issue, the HITO president called for prompt action to ensure environmental protection and safeguard public health in the region.
