NONGPOH, March 23: The KSU RIST-USTM Unit organised the 4th Barrister Pakem Memorial Sports Meet on March 21 to honour Prof. Barrister Pakem, a prominent intellectual and the first Khasi Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
The opening ceremony was attended by Lambok Rymbai, vice-president of KSU North Khasi Hills District, as the chief guest, and organising secretary Baiashan Kharshanlor as the guest of honour.
In his address, Rymbai noted that the KSU recently completed 48 years of service and praised the unit for using sports to foster unity and identity among students.
On the other hand, Kharshanlor spoke on the importance of balancing academics with extracurricular activities, urging students to stay connected to their roots and contribute to the community.
He noted that sports provide avenues for personal growth and livelihoods while instilling discipline and mutual respect.
Earlier, Rajesh Shokhwa welcomed the participants and acknowledged Prof. Pakem’s contributions as a visionary figure. He also noted the KSU’s expanding presence, including outreach efforts in New Delhi.
The closing ceremony featured Reuben A Najiar, assistant general secretary of the KSU Central Executive Committee (CEC), and James H Mawphniang, Legal Affairs Secretary of the KSU CEC. Mawphniang lauded the unit for its consistent efforts to preserve the legacy of Prof. Pakem. Najiar encouraged students to draw inspiration from the late academic’s humility and to make informed, positive choices for their future while upholding community values.
