TURA, March 25: The Bolwarigisim Clan of Bolwarigre A•king has alleged illegal land encroachment and unauthorised development on disputed land in Tura, citing a legal battle that has been pending since 1987.
The clan claims that large portions of their land have been encroached upon and developed by government departments and private agencies without following legal procedures. Specifically, they alleged that land for the Tura Medical College was acquired without adhering to the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
Despite a 2019 Meghalaya High Court direction to the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) to examine the matter, the clan stated they have received no official order or clarity on the outcome.
Tensions escalated in 2025 when cashewnut plantations belonging to local villagers were reportedly destroyed for the proposed Tura Information Technology Park. Although an FIR was filed, the clan alleged that no substantial action followed.
In a recent development, the Court of the Deputy Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) issued an order restraining all construction and development on the disputed land until the A•king case between Bolwarigre and Doldigre is resolved.
The clan has notified government authorities of the court’s directive and warned the public and government agencies against purchasing or acquiring land in the area without verification from the A•king Nokma, citing legal consequences for unauthorised transactions.
