RI-BHOI (MEGHALAYA), MARCH 27 /–/ The second day of the North East Graduate Congress
(NEGC) 2026 at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya was marked by a
grand Formal Inaugural Ceremony along with a vibrant cultural rally representing all eight
North Eastern states, reflecting the rich diversity and unity of the region.
The day began on an energetic and colourful note with a cultural rally featuring students
dressed in traditional attire from Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur,
Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim, according to a Press release.
The rally showcased the unique cultural heritage, folk traditions, and identities of each state, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere across the campus. The procession symbolised unity in diversity and set the tone for the day’s
proceedings, drawing appreciation from dignitaries, participants, and attendees alike.
The Formal Inaugural Ceremony that followed was graced by eminent dignitaries, including
Shri Timothy D Shira, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Fisheries and
Tourism, Government of Meghalaya; Lakhmen Rymbui, Minister of Education,
Information & Public Relations and Law, Government of Meghalaya; Shri Sosthenes Sohun,
Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Rural Development & Secretariat Administration;
Mayralborn Syem, Hon’ble MLA of Nongpoh–Ri Bhoi.
The programme commenced with a formal welcome address, followed by the ceremonial
lighting of the lamp, symbolising the illumination of knowledge and the spirit of learning.
The gathering reflected a confluence of academic enthusiasm and cultural pride, as students
and delegates from across the North East came together on a common platform.
In his address, the Chief Guest, Timothy D Shira, Meghalaya’s Minister of Agriculture &
Farmers’ Welfare, Fisheries and Tourism, highlighted the
importance of youth participation in shaping the future of the region and commended NEGC
as a platform that nurtures leadership, innovation, and collaboration. He encouraged students
to actively engage in knowledge-sharing and contribute meaningfully to society.
Lakhmen Rymbui emphasised the transformative role of education and urged students to
bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application. He appreciated the
efforts of USTM in fostering a culture of intellectual exchange and holistic development.
Shri Sosthenes Sohun spoke on inclusive growth and rural development, encouraging young
minds to take active roles in grassroots transformation.
Mayralborn Syem lauded the initiative for promoting unity and cultural integration among the youth of the North East.
The inaugural session set a dynamic tone for the ongoing Congress, which continues with a
series of academic competitions, paper presentations, and interactive sessions involving
participants from across the region.
Now in its 8th edition, NEGC remains a flagship initiative of USTM, committed to
empowering youth, promoting academic excellence, and celebrating the cultural richness of
the North East through platforms that inspire collaboration and innovation.
