JOWAI, March 27: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), Jaintia Hills, has urged the public to stop paying toll fees at the Ialong and Lumshnong toll plazas on National Highway-6.
The call follows an inspection of the Jowai-Ratacherra stretch by HITO leaders, including Khiejoit Niang and WN Dkhar.
During the inspection, the organisation found that the highway remains incomplete and in poor condition despite ongoing construction work.
HITO stated that according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways guidelines, toll fees are intended for the maintenance and repair of roads.
The group argued that the current state of NH-6 does not meet the standards required for toll collection.
Maintaining that vehicle owners should not be charged for using a substandard road, the HITO said that toll operators cannot compel payment under such conditions.
HITO further advised commuters to report any instances of forced collection to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
