SHILLONG, March 27: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday said the state government is investing nearly Rs 1,200 crore annually in the education sector, supporting over 4,500 institutions through ad hoc and deficit grants.
Addressing the valedictory function of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Synod College at the Students’ Field in Jaiaw, he noted that around Rs 120 crore is spent every year on teachers’ salaries under the deficit grant system, with Synod College among the beneficiaries.
He added that Meghalaya stands out among the Northeastern states for its sustained commitment to supporting a large number of institutions.
Emphasising the importance of education, the chief minister described investment in human capital as the most crucial element for societal progress. He also acknowledged the ongoing reforms based on the recommendations of the Education Reforms Commission.
Pointing to the Meghalaya’s demographic advantage, Sangma said that nearly 50 per cent of the state’s population is below the age of 20—about 18 lakh young people—describing it as both an opportunity and a challenge.
The chief minister, at the same time, expressed concern over issues such as drug abuse and rising HIV cases and appealed for collective efforts from institutions, student bodies and society.
Advocating a shift in mindset, he encouraged the youths to embrace entrepreneurship.
“Around 60,000 young people enter the workforce annually, but only 1,000 to 2,000 government jobs are available. The answer lies in entrepreneurship,” he said, urging educational institutions to promote skill development and innovation.
Praising Synod College’s legacy, he said the institution has grown “from humble beginnings” to shape generations of responsible citizens guided by strong values. He also recalled his association with the college and recognised the contributions of notable alumni, including late JD Rymbai.
Earlier, college principal G. Lyngdoh outlined the college’s journey since its establishment in 1965 with just 43 students. Today, it has grown to over 3,000 students across multiple streams and has secured an A+ grade in its latest NAAC accreditation, Lyngdoh added.
She informed the gathering that plans are under way to establish an extended campus at Mawpdang in the New Shillong Township.
The programme featured the release of the College Souvenir, cultural performances and the announcement of winners of the College Week competitions.
The celebration marked the culmination of College Week 2026, themed ‘Grace, Growth and Gratitude’, commemorating 60 years of excellence and service by the college.
