Indian Sailing League sets sail at Umiam

Shillong, March 27: The inaugural edition of the Indian Sailing League (ISL) got underway at Umiam on Friday, bringing together 182 participants across 14 teams, including 58 international sailors representing eight countries, in a significant boost to competitive sailing in the region.
The five-day event, scheduled from March 27 to 31 at the Umiam Water Sports Complex (Orchid Lake Resort), is being organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Umiam Sailing Club and the United De Novo Association of Yachting.
The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries and officials associated with the sport.Organisers described the league as an important step in expanding the footprint of sailing in India, with a strong turnout of domestic and international participants reflecting growing interest in the discipline.The inaugural programme featured felicitation of guests, team captains and technical officials, along with cultural performances and the release of a commemorative postal stamp and a sailing magazine. This was followed by the formal commencement of the races.
With a diverse field of participants and a competitive schedule lined up over the next few days, the Indian Sailing League is expected to provide a strong platform for sailors while further strengthening the sport’s presence in the country.
