Jerusalem, March 27: Israel’s defence minister said on Friday that Israeli attacks on Iran “will escalate and expand.”
Israel Katz made the comment in a statement noting that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “warned the Iranian terrorist regime to stop firing missiles at the civilian population in Israel.”
“Despite the warnings, the firing continues – and therefore (Israeli military) attacks in Iran will escalate and expand to additional targets and areas that assist the regime in building and operating weapons against Israeli citizens,” Katz said. “They will pay heavy, increasing prices for this war crime.”
Tehran enforces new Strait of Hormuz toll regime
Iran is tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz, establishing a de facto “toll booth” system. Ships must enter Iranian waters and submit cargo, crew, and ownership details to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for approval, with some paying tolls in yuan.
Transit has dropped 90% since the war began, driving global oil prices higher. Iran’s parliament may formalize fees to assert sovereignty and generate revenue.
The UN and maritime experts warn this violates international law guaranteeing “innocent passage.” Gulf states condemn the move as “economic terrorism,” highlighting risks to global energy security and trade stability.
Wall Street tumbles as Trump delays Hormuz ultimatum
US President Donald Trump delayed a threatened strike on Iran’s energy infrastructure, extending the Strait of Hormuz deadline to April 6, citing ongoing “very well” talks despite Iran rejecting the US 15-point ceasefire plan. Israel continued airstrikes in Tehran and southern Lebanon, while Iran-backed attacks targeted Gulf states, heightening regional tensions.
Markets plunged, oil prices rose, and UN officials warned of worsening food and energy crises if the war persists. Israel deployed additional troops, expanding its control up to the Litani River.
