SHILLONG, March 28: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the 150th-anniversary celebrations of Lawjynriew, Nongthymmai, and lauded the locality as a model of harmony and progressive community development.
Congratulating the Dorbar Shnong and residents, the chief minister noted that Lawjynriew’s history is deeply intertwined with the growth of Shillong. He highlighted the locality’s evolution from its early days of traditional governance to its formal land registration in 1876, while successfully balancing cultural heritage with modernity.
Praising the community for its forward-looking initiatives, Sangma noted that Lawjynriew was among the first to introduce door-to-door garbage collection despite being outside the Shillong Municipal Board’s jurisdiction.
He also commended the shnong’s shift toward digitisation through the introduction of an online dashboard. “The strength of Lawjynriew lies in its unity, respect for tradition and openness to progress,” the chief minister said.
Reaffirming the state’s support for community-driven development, he announced a grant of Rs 30 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund to address the locality’s requirements.
During the event, the chief minister also unveiled several projects, including a CCTV network, eight location signages and the locality’s official website and digital dashboard.
The event was also attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope, KHADC CEM Winton Tony Lyngdoh and Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ainam Sing Syiem.
