DUBAI, March 28: Israel launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities after warning it would “escalate and expand” its campaign, marking a sharp intensification of the ongoing conflict. Iranian state media reported attacks on the Shahid Khondab Heavy Water Complex in Arak and the Ardakan yellowcake production plant in Yazd province.
While no casualties or contamination were reported, Israel described the strikes as a major blow to Iran’s nuclear program.
Iran swiftly vowed retaliation, with officials warning that future responses would go beyond proportional measures.
Iran responded by attacking Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, wounding at least 10 US service members—two seriously—and damaging refueling aircraft.
The attack highlights the widening regional scope of the war, drawing in US forces and Gulf states. Saudi Arabia also intercepted missiles and drones targeting Riyadh, while Kuwait reported damage to key port infrastructure, including a China-linked project.
Despite the escalation, a limited diplomatic breakthrough emerged. Iran agreed to allow humanitarian aid and agricultural shipments to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following a UN request.
This move is significant because the waterway handles roughly 20% of global oil shipments and nearly one-third of fertilizer trade.
While global attention has focused on energy disruptions, restrictions on fertilizer exports pose serious risks to agriculture and food security worldwide.
Iran said the decision reflects its commitment to facilitating essential aid during the conflict.
Fighting intensified further with missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. Airstrikes caused power outages in Tehran, while explosions and multiple impact sites were reported in Tel Aviv, where emergency services responded to widespread damage.
Casualties continue to mount, including civilian deaths in Israel and Lebanon.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Countries such as Pakistan and Turkey are attempting to broker talks between the US and Iran, while G7 foreign ministers have called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and infrastructure
The US has increased its military presence in the region, deploying Marines and paratroopers, though officials say ground troop engagement is not currently planned.
The humanitarian toll is rising rapidly. Tens of thousands of buildings in Iran have been damaged, displacing large numbers of civilians. Aid organizations warn that continued fighting could trigger a broader regional refugee crisis.
Overall, the conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths across Iran, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, and other areas, underscoring the growing risk of a prolonged and wider war. (AP)
