SHILLONG, March 31: Members of the Ka Synjuk Ki Trai Bad Nongniah Kali Kamai Bri Hynniewtrep (SKT&NKKBH) on Tuesday submitted a formal complaint to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, demanding strict action in connection with the alleged assault of a tourist taxi driver on March 27.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, union member Balajied Jyrwa said the delegation expressed strong resentment over the violent attack on one of their members.
He stated that taxi drivers provide essential services to both residents and visitors, often working long hours under difficult conditions.
“Such unprovoked acts of violence not only cause physical and mental trauma to the victim but also create a sense of insecurity among the entire driving community. We cannot tolerate the manhandling of our members while they are performing their duties,” Jyrwa said.
The union has demanded the immediate identification and arrest of the accused, urging the police to register a case under relevant legal provisions and ensure that strong action is taken.
Jyrwa further said that the union has requested the police to build a strong case to deter future incidents of harassment against commercial drivers.
Raising additional concerns, the union alleged that the assailant had brandished a weapon during the incident to intimidate the driver.
In this regard, they have demanded immediate revocation of the individual’s arms licence, stating that such behaviour poses a serious threat to public safety.
The union also expressed solidarity with the victim and urged the police to act swiftly to ensure justice is delivered.
It warned that failure to take visible action could compel the organisation to take further steps to safeguard the welfare and dignity of its members.
