SHILLONG, April 5: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has raised concerns over the vulnerability of indigenous communities in the North East, cautioning that demographic pressures linked to migration remain a serious issue.
Speaking to reporters, NESO chairman, Samuel Jyrwa, said communities in the region are “microscopic” in size and therefore particularly exposed to external pressures, including migration from Bangladesh.
He pointed to developments in Tripura and parts of Assam, where, he noted, indigenous people have been overwhelmed and reduced to a minority in their own land.
Jyrwa warned that for Meghalaya, the threat is equally real and cannot be ignored. He emphasised that people must remain alert to developments in Bangladesh, as well as migration patterns in neighbouring states.
Calling for collective awareness, he highlighted that safeguarding the identity and interests of indigenous communities will require vigilance and a clear understanding of the challenges unfolding across the region.
