KYIV, April 7: Ukraine has proposed a pause in attacks on energy infrastructure with Russia over the upcoming Orthodox Easter holiday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced.
The offer, conveyed through the United States, would see Ukraine halt strikes if Russia reciprocates, though Zelenskyy expressed doubt Moscow would accept, citing Russia’s financial gains from higher oil prices amid the Iran conflict.
Previous ceasefires have largely failed, and US-mediated talks on broader peace have made little progress, with both armies locked in ongoing battles along a 1,250-kilometre front.
Meanwhile, Russia continues targeting Ukraine’s power grid and civilian infrastructure.
On Tuesday, a Russian drone struck a bus in Nikopol during rush hour, killing four and injuring 15, while attacks on Kherson and near Synelnykove killed an additional four civilians.
Authorities condemned the strikes as deliberate attacks on civilians.
Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign has targeted Russian oil infrastructure, aiming to weaken Moscow’s export revenue, exploiting overstretched Russian air defenses.
Power outages were reported in multiple eastern and southern regions due to ongoing artillery and drone attacks, as the conflict intensifies amid regional tensions and the US-Israeli war in Iran. (AP)
