SHILLONG, April 7: Madan Hindi Patshala Secondary School has introduced Khasi as a subject for the first time in its 61-year history, following an intervention by the Madanriting Dorbar Shnong and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
It may be mentioned that the school was temporarily shut down by local authorities on April 1 after failing to include the language in its curriculum despite repeated reminders. The issue gained urgency after the state government made proficiency in local languages mandatory for recruitment under the District Selection Committee (DSC). Expressing satisfaction with the development, Madanriting Rangbah Shnong Ricky Lyngdoh on Tuesday said that the school management has now appointed a Khasi teacher. The decision was finalised during a meeting between the Dorbar Shnong and school authorities on April 4.
“We are happy that the school has finally appointed a Khasi teacher. This has been a long-pending issue,” Lyngdoh said, adding that many parents have welcomed the move.
Normal classes resumed on Monday.
Lyngdoh noted that the previous lack of Khasi as a subject had negatively impacted enrolment, with some students leaving the institution. He expressed hope that student numbers would now improve at the historic school.
It is pertinent to note that the Dorbar Shnong had been pursuing the matter since 2024. While the school management had offered assurances in the past, concrete action was taken only after the recent intervention.
