SHILLONG, April 8: The Green-Tech Foundation, Meghalaya, on Wednesday announced an indefinite silent sit-in at Lumpongdeng Island in Umiam Lake against the proposed development of a five-star luxury resort and spa in the ecologically sensitive area.
The Foundation stated that the protest would continue indefinitely until the state government cancels the project.
Raising concerns over the alleged transfer of land, the organisation claimed that approximately 66 acres— including around 33 acres on the island—has reportedly been allotted to the Indian Hotels Company Limited for a Taj-branded luxury project.
Foundation Chairman H Bansiewdor Nonglang alleged that “the negligence and indifference of the government” had compelled them to initiate the agitation.
He further announced that a protest march from Umiam Lake to Lumpongdeng Island commenced on Wednesday as part of their protests.
