MAWKYRWAT, April 10: Mawkyrwat Police on Friday arrested a 55-year-old man in connection with the rape of a minor girl nearly 12 years ago, after the case was revived by the Special POCSO Court.
According to Superintendent of Police B. Jyrwa, the incident dates back to 2014.
An FIR filed in October that year stated that a girl, then aged three years and six months, had been brutally raped by an unidentified person. The victim had to be referred to Shillong for specialised treatment due to the severity of her injuries.
The case was initially closed and a final report submitted after investigators failed to identify the culprit.
The breakthrough occurred recently when the victim, supported by her family, came forward and informed authorities that she could identify the perpetrator.
Following this development, the police petitioned the Court of the Special Judge (POCSO), Mawkyrwat, to reopen the case.
The court granted the prayer, and after recording the statements of the victim and witnesses, the police apprehended the accused on Friday.
