Nongstoin, April 10: The stage is set, the anticipation quietly building, as West Khasi Hills prepares to witness one of its most vibrant grassroots sporting spectacles. The Office of the District Sports Officer (DSO), West Khasi Hills, has announced that the 31st District Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2026 will be held from April 22 to April 24 at the Nongpathar Playground in Pyndengrei, Nongstoin.
The three-day meet, a staple in the district’s sporting calendar, is expected to bring together young athletes from various schools, all eager to test their speed, strength, and endurance across a wide range of track and field events.
But before the action unfolds on the field, the process begins behind the scenes. Entry forms are currently being issued from the DSO office in Nongstoin, with April 10 set as the final date for submission during office hours. This will be followed by a mandatory age screening test at the Indoor Stadium in Nongstoin on April 14 and 15, ensuring fair competition across categories.
Participation is restricted to bonafide students who have maintained a minimum of 75 per cent attendance in the current academic session, underlining the importance of discipline both inside and outside the classroom.
The competition will be conducted across three age groups — Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 — for both boys and girls, with strict verification through original documents such as Aadhaar cards and birth certificates, alongside other recognised credentials.On the field, the meet promises a rich blend of athletic disciplines. From explosive sprints to gruelling long-distance races, from precision-based throws to high-flying jumps, the event will test the all-round ability of participants.
Triathlon events combining multiple skills, relays that demand teamwork and timing, and technical contests like shot put, discus, and high jump will all feature prominently. Notably, for Under-14 athletes, participation in the javelin throw with a five-metre runway has been made mandatory, adding an extra layer of challenge at the grassroots level.
The meet will commence with a ceremonial march-in on the opening day, a moment that often captures the pride and unity of participating institutions.
It will culminate in a march past competition on the final day, blending discipline with display in a fitting conclusion to the event.
Beyond medals and podium finishes, the championship serves a larger purpose. It is a platform where raw talent meets opportunity, where young dreams take shape on dusty tracks and open fields.
