SHILLONG, April 11: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Friday said the Committee on Estimates, which he heads as chairman, reviewed the work of six departments, such as Education, PWD, PHE, Social Welfare, Home (Police) and IT, in the past two days.
Giving a summary of the discussions, Syiem said the committee examined implementation and infrastructure under the Education Department, including construction of the Model Degree College at Rongjeng, expansion of the Kiang Nangbah College, establishment of polytechnics in various districts, and upgradation of government LP schools.
On the PWD, he said the committee reviewed government buildings both within and outside the state, including renovation and upgradation of Meghalaya Houses.
Regarding the PHE Department, discussions focused on the progress of the Greater Ampati Water Supply Scheme and other projects, with instructions issued for their early completion.
Syiem said the committee expressed concern that around 1,600 villages still do not have anganwadi centres, and advised the Social Welfare Department to explore ways to address the gap.
On the Home (Police) Department, the committee reviewed infrastructure development in Khasi and Garo regions, and directed the implementing agency and the police headquarters to expedite ongoing works.
Syiem said the committee noted that the IT Park at Umsawli has been completed and expressed hope that it will help address unemployment. The status of last-mile connectivity for high-speed internet was also reviewed, with the project in its final stages and already operational in some areas.
Syiem said the committee’s overall approach is not to find fault but ensure that provisions passed in the budget reach the last mile. He added that improved internet connectivity will support initiatives like smart classrooms and digital education.
He stressed the need for convergence among departments to address social issues, including teenage pregnancy, early marriage, substance abuse and tobacco use, suggesting community sensitisation through coordinated efforts involving stakeholders.
