China state media goes digital, often targets US

BEIJING, April 11: China’s state media is increasingly using artificial intelligence and social media to reshape its global messaging, moving away from rigid propaganda toward more creative, entertainment-style content that often criticizes the United States. According to the report, Beijing is leveraging AI-generated videos, memes, and short animations to present geopolitical narratives in simplified, visually engaging formats aimed especially at younger global audiences.
One recent example is a five-minute AI-generated animation depicting a symbolic conflict involving a white eagle representing the US and Persian cats representing Iran, portraying themes of war, revenge, and resistance. The video was released by China’s state broadcaster CCTV and gained significant attention online, going viral after being subtitled and shared on X. It is part of a growing trend of AI-driven “infotainment” used to comment on international events and mock US policies and leaders.
The shift reflects China’s broader strategy under President Xi Jinping to expand its global influence, counter Western narratives, and strengthen its voice in international affairs. Experts say these AI-generated formats are designed to appeal to Gen Z audiences and make Chinese viewpoints more accessible and persuasive.
Analysts note that this marks a significant departure from earlier decades when Chinese propaganda relied on formal, slogan-heavy messaging that often failed to engage younger citizens. Today, state media increasingly adopts pop culture elements such as rap music, cinematic storytelling, and influencer-style content to enhance appeal.
The report also highlights China’s coordinated global “media matrix,” involving diplomats, state media, influencers, and digital accounts across platforms like X and Facebook, which amplifies these narratives internationally. Similar AI-generated content has mocked US policies, including territorial ambitions and foreign strategy decisions.
Officials and scholars suggest this approach is becoming a routine part of China’s communication strategy, with some arguing it is effective in shaping perceptions abroad. However, critics view it as part of an intensifying global information war between China and the United States, where both sides are increasingly using digital tools to influence global opinion.
