KABUL, April 11: A report cited by the Afghan Diaspora Network alleges that Pakistan’s response under its defence pact with Saudi Arabia has been largely symbolic amid regional tensions involving Iran. It claims that although Pakistani officials referred to the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA), Islamabad did not deploy significant military assets such as air defence systems or fighter jets, instead offering mediation.
The report says Saudi Arabia allegedly sought stronger military backing during recent escalations but was disappointed by Pakistan’s limited involvement, viewing it as a failure to meet expectations under the pact. Pakistan is said to have cited internal security challenges, including its conflict with Afghanistan, as a reason for restraint.
The analysis also references Pakistan’s past decisions, including its refusal to join Saudi-led operations in Yemen and its reliance on alliances with countries like the US and China for economic support.
It concludes that Pakistan’s cautious stance could damage trust with Saudi Arabia, a key financial and strategic partner. (IANS)
