Tura, April 13: BJP leader and Tura MDC, Bernard N Marak, on Monday strongly condemned what he termed, the shocking and deeply disturbing act of desecration of the statue of Lord Jesus Christ at Chibinang Main Market.

The matter came to light during his recent visit to Chibinang and the surrounding villages affected by the recent conflict, where Marak was informed by local residents about a incident. The matter had neither been reported in the media nor brought to public attention till now.

“According to villagers, a mob — comprising largely of illegal migrants — was instigated and provoked by former MLA and MDC, Esmatur Mominin. The mob allegedly engaged in widespread violence, including the burning of shops and residential houses, and deliberately targeted religious symbols, including  the destruction of the statue of Lord Jesus Christ,” Bernard claimed, in a statement.

“The remains of the desecrated statue at Chibinang Bazar stand as a painful testament to what appears to be a targeted attack against the Christian community. Such acts not only violate the law but also threaten communal harmony and religious freedom guaranteed under the Constitution of India,” he added.

The MDC expressed concern that there was no filing of an FIR till date or any media coverage as well as no action from authorities.

Meanwhile, Bernard has assured the people to personally look into the matter and file an FIR as well as initiate strict legal action against all individuals involved in the incident.
