SHILLONG, April 12: Highlighting a worsening power crisis in Garo Hills, Rajabala MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi has flagged prolonged outages of seven to ten hours daily, stating that residents can no longer distinguish between scheduled and unscheduled load-shedding.
Kazi said the crisis is affecting the entire region, with the plain belt particularly hit. He pointed out that even minor wind or rain triggers immediate disruptions, while heavy voltage fluctuations are damaging household appliances.
The MLA noted that poor voltage quality, frequent transformer failures, and delays in addressing faults have aggravated the situation. According to him, even minor breakdowns are often not repaired until the following day, despite electricity being an essential service.
Raising concern over rising electricity bills, Kazi said consumers—many from economically weaker sections—are facing an increasing financial burden. He suggested that any necessary tariff hikes be implemented gradually rather than in a single instance. He also highlighted the impact on livelihoods, stating that unreliable power is crippling local agriculture and small industries.
Calling for urgent intervention, the MLA urged the government to move beyond assurances and take concrete action to resolve the crisis immediately.
