TURA, April 13: Social activists Nilberth Ch Marak and Flaming Marak have petitioned the Meghalaya Governor to facilitate early elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), terming the state government’s delay “illegal and unreasonable.”
In their complaint, the activists argued that the postponement violates council rules, which permit such a move only during emergencies like war, financial crises, or natural calamities. They stated that none of these conditions currently exist and that the government has failed to provide acceptable grounds for stalling the polls.
While acknowledging past violence in Garo Hills, the duo pointed out that the administration has already restored normalcy in the region.
The activists further contended that extending the term of the current Executive Committee (EC) after its expiration is unconstitutional. They urged the Governor to impose Administrator’s Rule if the government is unable to hold elections immediately, rather than granting further extensions to the outgoing EC.
