TURA, April 13: A statue of Jesus Christ at Chibinang Main Market was allegedly desecrated by a mob in a shocking incident that has sparked outrage in West Garo Hills.
According to locals, the statue was deliberately targeted and destroyed during a wave of violence that also involved the burning of shops and residential houses. The remains of the vandalised statue still stand at Chibinang Bazar as a painful reminder of the attack.
BJP state vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak strongly condemned the act on Monday, describing it as “shocking and deeply disturbing.”
Marak alleged that the mob, which comprised largely of illegal migrants, was instigated and provoked by former MLA and MDC, SG Esmatur Mominin. He claimed the violence was specifically aimed at religious symbols of the Christian community.
“The remains of the desecrated statue at Chibinang Bazar stand as a painful testament to what appears to be a targeted attack against the Christian community,” Marak said in a statement.
“Such acts not only violate the law but also threaten communal harmony and religious freedom guaranteed under the Constitution of India,” the MDC said.
He expressed serious concern over the fact that no FIR has been filed till date, and the incident has received neither media coverage nor any response from the authorities.
Marak has assured the affected people that he will personally look into the matter, ensure an FIR is registered, and initiate strict legal action against all individuals involved.
