Pak security forces arrest 16 terrorists
LAHORE, April 14: Pakistan’s security agencies arrested 16 terrorists belonging to various banned outfits, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda, and Daesh (ISIS), during multiple intelligence-based operations in Punjab, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), security forces conducted 113 operations across different districts over the past week, leading to the arrests and the foiling of a major terror plot. Among those detained was a suspected suicide bomber from Jhang and another militant, Moin Khan, allegedly involved in attacks on security installations in Sargodha.
Authorities recovered weapons, more than 5 kilograms of explosives, detonators, 25 feet of safety fuse wire, and a suicide jacket from the suspects. Officials said the group was planning attacks on police posts and other security targets.
The CTD spokesperson confirmed that cases have been registered against all arrested individuals, and further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader network involved in the planned attacks. (PTI)
Turkey school shooting: 16 hurt, attacker dead
ANKARA, April 14: A former student opened fire at a vocational high school in Siverek, Şanlıurfa province in southeast Turkey on Tuesday, injuring at least 16 people before killing himself, officials said. The 18-year-old attacker armed with a shotgun reportedly fired randomly inside the school and later died by suicide using the same weapon after being cornered by police. Authorities said the wounded included 10 students, four teachers, a canteen worker and a police officer, with several in serious condition and transferred to hospital in the provincial capital. The motive remains unclear and a full investigation has been launched as school shootings are rare in Turkey. Video footage showed students fleeing the building as security forces evacuated the area and sealed off school. (AP)
Nepal marks New Year 2083
Kathmandu, April 14: Nepal marked the start of New Year 2083 on Tuesday under the Bikram Sambat calendar, celebrating Baisakh 1 (Baisakh Sankranti) with nationwide festivities. The occasion, based on the solar cycle, is observed through temple visits, prayers, hymns, community gatherings, and exchange of greetings, while people reflect on the past year and set new resolutions for the year ahead.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah “Balen” extended greetings, wishing citizens happiness, peace, and prosperity. President Ramchandra Paudel urged Nepalis to work toward shared national goals, strengthen good governance, ensure social justice, and uphold the federal democratic republic, noting that recent elections reflected public aspirations for stability after prolonged political challenges. Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav also conveyed New Year wishes, encouraging citizens to embrace positivity, discipline, fraternity, and unity as the country enters the new year. (PTI)
