SHILLONG, April 17: Amidst the controversies surrounding the construction of the proposed Taj Umiam Luxury Resorts & Spa at Umiam Lake, officials have asserted that the development plan has been carefully designed to prioritise environmental sensitivity.
A government source said the development plan includes removing the existing unsafe structures while ensuring that no construction is undertaken on Lumpongdeng Island, thereby preserving its natural state.
The source said that all engagements and opportunities have been secured strictly on merit, without any undue influence or consideration from any authority, including the Government of Meghalaya. He insisted that the project, once completed, would boost local employment with sustainable development.
Officials said that Umiam Hotels Private Limited is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of a reputed Northeast-based group with experience in developing and managing large-scale hospitality projects across India. They added that this group’s portfolio includes collaborations with leading hospitality brands such as IHCL and Taj Hotels (TATA Group), reflecting strong credentials and a proven track record in execution.
“Based on this experience, the group has been entrusted with a significant opportunity in the hospitality sector for developing Taj Umiam Resorts & Spa. The group participated in a bid for the development and management of a project under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model,” the source said.
Under this framework, the asset will be developed, operated, and maintained by the private partner during the lease period, following which it will be transferred to the Government of Meghalaya, thereby becoming a public asset.
According to the source, the investment in Meghalaya is driven by the state’s strong tourism potential and progressive outlook.
The state is known for its natural beauty and strong hospitality sector. With tourism playing a major role in its economy and attracting investors, Meghalaya has become an ideal place for long-term hospitality projects.
Officials said that the group has been exploring and developing similar projects in other states and reinvests in regions where it operates.
Meanwhile, the implementing company stated that the allegations made against it are baseless, claiming that it maintains a strong and unblemished track record.
“Both our group and the TATA Group adhere to the highest standards of ethical practices. With the blessings of the public and continued trust, no adverse findings have been reported against us by any agency or individual to date,” the company said.
