Did Pope Leo find his voice in Africa or elsewhere?

Luanda (Angola), April 20: The article examines the growing global attention on Pope Leo XIV and whether his strong messages during his Africa tour shaped his “voice” or whether reactions in the United States finally amplified it.
During his visit to Africa, Pope Leo delivered powerful speeches condemning “tyrants” and “chains of corruption,” particularly in relation to conflicts and instability on the continent, including violence in western Cameroon. Supporters argued that his trip helped clarify his moral voice, grounded in local African realities and Catholic teaching on peace and justice.
However, Vatican officials and analysts say Leo has been expressing similar views for some time, including criticism of global conflicts such as the US-Israel war in Iran. His messages, they argue, were not new but gained global attention only after strong political reactions in the United States, particularly from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Their comments on social media and political responses helped bring wider public focus, especially among American Catholics.
Vatican adviser Cardinal Michael Czerny said the pope’s speeches were carefully prepared in advance and reflected African realities, not direct political attacks on the US. He added that if the messages seemed relevant to global wars, it was because of their universal moral themes.
Leo also addressed accusations that his remarks were aimed at Trump, insisting he was referring specifically to African conflicts. Yet he has previously made unusually direct appeals regarding the Iran war, even urging citizens to pressure political leaders to pursue peace—a move described by experts as unprecedented for a modern pope.
Scholars noted this approach reflects a new level of papal engagement with global politics, especially during wartime, and could reshape expectations of religious authority in political debates.
Despite the controversy, Vatican officials stress that Leo’s core message remains unchanged: a consistent call for peace, dialogue, and opposition to war. On the ground in Africa, large crowds continue to welcome him warmly, hearing his messages in multiple languages as he travels across the continent. (AP)
