Dwayne Johnson has shared a glimpse of the upcoming live-action Moana, praising its role in bringing global audiences closer to Polynesian culture, traditions, and heritage.
The film is a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 2016 animated hit and the third installment in the Moana franchise. It is directed by Thomas Kail in his feature film debut and stars newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Johnson said it is a privilege to bring the live-action version to theatres and highlighted its cultural significance.
He noted that Moana has already helped people around the world connect more deeply with Polynesian identity, and said the new adaptation strengthens that connection through a more “flesh and blood” storytelling approach.
Johnson also reflected on the personal inspiration behind his character Maui, revealing that it was based on his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia.
He described Maui as a supportive force who empowers Moana, emphasizing that the character represents encouragement rather than dominance.
He also introduced Moana as a “warrior, not a princess,” stressing themes of strength, leadership, and self-belief.
Praising Catherine Laga’aia, Johnson called her the “hero” of the story and introduced her as a rising talent who brings the character to life.
Laga’aia expressed excitement about audiences experiencing the film in theatres.
In his social media post, Johnson said the values shown in Moana—family, work ethic, and cultural pride—resonate across all cultures.
He added that sharing Polynesian heritage with the world has been one of the most meaningful parts of his journey and expressed pride in continuing the story for a new generation. (IANS)
